FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How much does it cost to start kiteboarding?

A: A full set of gear (board, kite, bar, lines and harness) will run you anywhere from $500 to $2,000. Many manufacturers offer entry-level packages that are very reasonable.

Q: Is kiteboarding easy?

A: Yes and no. With good instruction, most people enjoy and incredibly fast learning curve. Without instruction, trying to learn kiteboarding can be frustrating and dangerous.

Q: Do I need to be in good shape to kiteboard?

A: A basic level of fitness is all you need. Modern gear can be adjusted to work for people with a broad range of physical abilities.

Q: Why can't I just learn from a video or magazine?

A: You can learn a lot from videos and magazines, but there is no substitute for having an instructor provide feedback, share local knowledge, maximize safety and customize instruction. Not to mention most instructors are really cool!

Q: Why do lessons focus on flying the kite?

A: Flying the kite well is at least 90% of kiteboarding. Trying to ride a board without good kite skills is like trying to wakeboard behind a boat that is swerving and changing speeds. It can be dangerous and not as much fun.

Q: Do I need any skills before I take a lesson?

A: All you need is to be comfortable in the water and ready to learn. Many people learn kiteboarding despite limited board sport experience.

Kiteboarding is a new sport, which uses a big kite with a surf or wakeboard to fly across the water or to fly into the air. Why kiteboard? The thrill of the kite pulling you off the water anywhere is amazing! Kiteboarding is a jumping sport. There is no other sport on earth that can match the height, length, float time, and buttery smooth landing of kiteboarding. How can this happen you ask?!? What happens is the kite is pulled in the opposite direction of where you are going, tension builds on the lines, which causes the kite to pull you up off the water. As soon as you go up, you pull the kite back over you and you float down from 20 feet and land buttery smooth on the water. The rush of acceleration and speed is like having rockets attached to you because you go from 0-50 mph in two seconds. The speeds on the water average 10-25 mph with the possibility to go much faster should you choose to!

Kite boarding lessons are mandatory to a beginner. This is to insure that you or someone else is not hurt or that the equipment is not damaged. Lessons occur in progression starting with a beginner's lesson, which covers safety and basic small kite flying. The second lessons covers flying an inflatable kite, body dragging in the water, and how to use the pull of the kite. The third lesson shows you how to drive the kite for power, which is necessary to get up on the board.

Kiteboarding is fun because you are flying a kite and riding a board and the jumps are amazing!
